San Francisco’s Mission District, an ethnically diverse and economically vulnerable neighborhood, thrives on the small economies of the communities within a community in this large city. As is often the case, food lies at the heart of so many of these communities, and often becomes an economic epicenter and a hive for ‘hidden entrepreneurs’.

In the streets of San Francisco, you can find the food, and thus the hearts, of the people and communities that make this city so vibrant. Recognizing a need to move these businesses towards the formal economy, in order to create self-sustaining businesses instead of income-patching and illegal home restaurants, organizations like Arriba Juntos, The Women’s Initiative for Self-Employment and The Women’s Foundation of California and one very special and visionary anonymous donor, worked to build this beautiful kitchen.
